Postdoctoral Scholars • Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education

The Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education (C-MORE) is headquartered at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. C-MORE is organized around four interconnected themes: (I) Marine microbial biodiversity; (II) Microbial metabolism and biogeochemistry; (III) Remote and continuous in-situ sensing of microbial processes and their links to climate variability; and (IV) Ecosystem modeling, computer simulation and prediction. This interdisciplinary research consortium includes scientists, engineers and educators from the University of Hawaii, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California at Santa Cruz, Oregon State University, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. We are seeking highly motivated and qualified individuals to join the C-MORE team at the University of Hawaii as C-MORE Postdoctoral Scholars.

Areas of Focus: The C-MORE Postdoctoral Scholars’ research will focus on one or more of the C-MORE theme areas as described above. For this solicitation, areas of special interest include (1) microbial diversity within marine plankton, including comparative genomics and the application of novel cultivation methods to isolate representatives of major groups; (2) marine virus ecology, including the development of virus-hosts systems for major groups of marine microbes; (3) physiology, metabolism and biogeochemistry of marine microbes; (4) remote and in-situ sensing of microbial processes; (5) modeling and simulation of microbial processes; and (6) bridging gaps between research and science education. Because C-MORE is a highly interdisciplinary Center, we are particularly interested in individuals whose expertise bridges disciplinary boundaries, e.g. the use of culture-based research to explore microbial physiology or biogeochemical processes. All C-MORE Postdoctoral Scholars participate in C-MORE education and outreach activities, and applicants with strong career interests or experience in science education will be offered additional opportunities to participate in and develop a variety of innovative education and outreach programs. C-MORE Postdoctoral Scholars will be encouraged and will have opportunities to interact with scientists from the partner institutions.

Qualifications: Successful candidates will hold a Ph.D. degree in oceanography, microbiology, ecology, or marine biology or related discipline, preferably obtained within the last three years. Applicants with a Ph.D. in science education and a strong background in marine science or microbial biology are also encouraged to apply. Stipends are commensurate with experience and qualifications. To apply, submit curriculum vitae, statement of interests in research and education, and the names and contact information of three professional references by email to Paul Kemp, C-MORE Associate Director (paul.kemp@hawaii.edu). Review of applications will begin on 24 October 2008, and will continue until all appointments are made. Positions will open as current Postdoctoral Scholars depart, starting immediately through mid-2009; the start date for any one position is flexible. For additional information please visit cmore.soest.hawaii.edu.

The University of Hawaii is an equal employment opportunity / affirmative action institution. We encourage applications from members of underrepresented groups.
