Current and Former Students and Collaborators

Collaborators

Dr. David Bates
David earned his Ph.D. from the University of Miami with Dr. Ken Voss on lidar algorithms and measurements and is an Assistant Researcher at UH Manoa. David has worked at UH modeling atmospheric and oceanic radiation with a custom Monte Carlo radiation code which he developed in collaboration with John Porter. Information on this work is given in the projects section. David is currently working with John Porter, Shiv Sharma and Anupam Misra to develop a scanning, time-resolved standoff Raman instrument for large area mineral detection on planetary surfaces.  David can be reached at:

Students

Andrew Frambach
Andrew earned his Meteorology bachelor's degree at UH Manoa, and is currently pursuing a master's degree. Andrew developed the current iteration of the software used to process MODIS satellite and WRF data for use with the aerosol optical depth algorithm. His software created the aerosol optical depth images available in the AOD Image Archive attached to this website, and the archive itself.  Andrew can be reached at andrew41@hawaii.edu.

Sheldon Kono
Sheldon earned his Meteorology bachelor's degree at UH Manoa. He is now a full-time programmer with the City and County of Honolulu.  Sheldon developed the first iteration of the software used to process MODIS satellite data for use with the aerosol optical depth algorithm, and much of his work forms the basis for the current version.

David Kress
David earned his Meteorology bachelor's degree at UH Manoa. He is now a full-time pilot at Island Air.  David worked on instrument development and field measurements.

Eric Lau
Eric earned his Meteorology bachelor's and master's degrees at UH Manoa.  He is now working for the National Weather Service in Honolulu. Eric worked on analysis of field measurements and computer programming.

Julia Waterspiel
While Julia was studying for her master's degree at the University of Zurich, Switzerland (Geography Remote Sensing), she visited UH Manoa to develop a new lidar system that would be used for environmental measurements.

Other students have worked with John Porter but on a shorter time scale.
