Icebreaker Surveys
Since 2001 the U.S.C.G.C. Healy and the R/V Nathaniel B. Palmer have conducting scientific cruise in the Arctic Ocean. The Healy is equipped with a SeaBeam 2112 multibeam sonar and the Palmer is equipped with a Simrad EM120. Both of these systems collect multibeam swath bathymetry while underway. Collecting data while breaking ice is difficult at best as the noise generated while pushing through ice tends to overwhelm any signal. This means careful editing must be done on the data to remove this noise while retaining as much valid data as possible.
